A Thoughtful Eye Blog posted some absolutely stunning pictures of Nina Griscom's Manhattan Townhouse that originally appeared in House & Garden's Magazine issue in October 2006. Former Ford model and television host Nina Griscom has had a passion for collecting while traveling. The hobby turned into a full time business when she opened a store for decor on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

“My Manhattan store came about as a result of my passion for travel and my true desire to edit and share the information that comes across my plate with a wider audience. Elle Decor featured French Decorator Frédéric Méchiche, who had recently turned an office space into a grand, neoclassical apartment straight out of Versailles. The room was bathed in soft grays with exquisite architectural details. Marble columns topped with Medici vases make their mark in the entrance hall. 18th-century trompe l’oeil grisaille wallpaper panels are found in the bathroom. In the living room, gilded moldings and ornate chandeliers mix with contemporary art. Geometrical patterns adorn the floor, and dark saturated paint colors with hues of blue and gray are chosen for the walls. Color is brought in with greenery, and upholstery, while the homes interior and architectural details remain in neutral gray and blue. Frédéric Méchiche's work originally was published in ELLE DECORATION France, and in the special issue of Elle Decor January February 2012.

Tcs02186 on ebay has some outstanding examples of Empire Salesman samples worthy of any sophisticated private or museum collection.

This miniature child's continental Empire inlaid mahogany chair features shiny ormolu mounts, and beautiful lines. The chair is likely to be French in nature and dates to approximately 1860-80. They also have listed a miniature Empire commode with bronze mounts which look spectacular together. This set would make a spectacular gift to a grandchild or a unique family gift that can be handed down for many generations.

The chair is made of mahogany and the back and up-swept arms are inlaid with boxwood or satinwood string inlay. The back is decorated with an ebonized panel with an ormolu wreath in the center,flanked on each side by a reclining woman in the neoclassical style. The other is playing a lyre and holding a table. The end of each arm has an ormolu mount. The inside of each arm also has a similar ormolu mount. The seat of the chair has a removable rectangular upholstered cushion which sits firmly between the arms. Below the seat on the front of the chair is another ebonized panel, this one decorated with an ormolu urn. This piece is a fine example of the highest quality of craftsmanship.

Miniature Diminutive Mahogany Commode c. 1850

This miniature diminutive mahogany commode c. 1850 is made of solid mahogany with beautiful graining. The rectangular top sits above four rows of two short drawers each. The drawers each have their original mounted gilt bronze drop handles. The drawers are separated by a vertical piece of mahogany decorated with a scrolling gilt bronze mount. Flanking the drawers are two spectacular gilt and embonized bronze neoclassical figures in the Egyptian revival style. The commode stands on square tapering legs. The two front legs are decorated with small bronze mounts. The piece is extremely well made.

Classical Empire Furniture Painted

This brightly painted blue chest goes to show how striking a chest can look painted. This chest features many beautiful carved details which are magnified with this rich blue paint. I don't think there could be another drawer pull that looks as amazing as the lion pull on this chest. The lion pulls look exceptionally large on this particular chest that they may not be drawer pulls but in fact door knockers. If you want a heavier hardware look, consider door knockers as some knockers actually resemble drawer pulls. If you consider painting a chest add some bright brass pulls to add contrast against the painted finish.

Designer John Saladino is best known for his period style decorating, and love for antiques. His passion for interesting antiques make his rooms feel interesting and rich than the typical designed room with modern accessories. The lovely Brooke wrote up an interesting post detailing his home that was featured in the Santa Barbara Design Style Magazine. As you can see his design style certainly isn't modern, and that's why we love him! Fellow Canadian Patricia Gray featured some beautiful shots of John Saladino's talent for creating and recognizing good architecture. He truly is a designer after the heart of the past. His rooms often feature fabrics and textures that are warm such as camel linens; beige leather, white cotton, olive green suede; dark reddish woods. He has made himself famous for his use of color and his use of a variety of textures. Saladino graduated from Notre Dame and the Yale School of Architecture, and later opened his design firm, Saladino Group Inc., in New York in 1972. His firm has grown into a "full service Architectural, Interior Design, and Landscape Design. Saladino has also designed furniture for companies like Dunbar, Bloomingdale's, Baker, Knapp, and Tubb's, and started his furniture line, Saladino Furniture Inc.

Stunning Directoire Style Furniture

The Directoire Style took place during 1789-1804. The simplification of furniture begun under Louis XVI along with a taste for more streamlined pieces that had less ornamentation became more prevalent. Most of the furniture through this time was inspired by the Greek and Pompeian models. Lines are straight with crisp geometric forms. Surfaces are flat and corners are clean. Motifs were in the forms of squares, rectangles and palmettes. Common Directoire period furniture from this period were crafted out of elm, walnut, fruitwood or beech. Painted pieces were often found in gray, white, sea green and lime green, and the carved ornament was often painted in a contrasting color or different shades of the same color.

Antiques on Old Plank Road is selling an outstanding antique French Restauration 3 Drawer Commode. The 3 drawer chest features lovely black paw feet complete with exquisite lion's head pulls accompaning the three drawers and an elegant marble that sits on the top. The superb craftsmanship shines as you can see the expert inlay and applied brass trimmings. The French Restauration Period is a softer version of the Empire style which came into vogue in the early 19th century in France. While cabinetmakers continued to employ the strong geometrical patterns of the Empire period they also added a some amount of whimsy and fantasy in their designs. Musical instruments were carved into the legs of small tables and desks. Woods were lighter in both color and density and the art of marquetry returned with decorative flowers, garlands and rosettes, and detailing that highlighted the architecture and geometry of furniture. These styles are associated with the reigns of Louis XVIII and Charles X. At the beginning of the Restauration period, under Louis XVIII, furniture was designed still mostly in the Empire style with the difference that the symbols used during the reign of Napoleon I were no longer used for obvious reasons. New York Social Diary had a really interesting article in November 2010 with interior classical designer Darren Henault and his wonderful 19th-century Fifth Avenue mansion in New York. He tells New York Social Diary that he was once an account executive for an advertising agency, and it wasn't until a friends dad who was architect noticed he had an eye for design; “You know there’s so many things that you notice, and the way that you talk about things. You really should become an interior designer.” Although Henault thought the sheer idea of designing was the "dumbest suggestion" he had heard, the friend talked him into taking a class at FIT. Henault grew up in the textile industry and has a great interest in every aspect of its production—from weaving and dying to finishing he tells Decorati. Perhaps some time in the future we can look forward to some textiles from this incredible designer. All the pictures are from New York Diary.

The versace brand has always incorportated luxurious patterns with great new styles while being overall sexy. "Boring " is not a word one would immediately associate with the name Versace. "Simplicity isn't either. In the Sept 09 issue of Style Magazine, they featured Donatella Versace's extravagant home in Milan where she owns 2 floors of an Italian Apartment furnished in esquisite empire furnishings. Ornate details and splashes of color can be seen through out her home as she incorporated interesting empire antiques with light colored ordimented boroque walls and pastel splashes of colors, in her paintings and through out her decorating. "But when I come home now, I want to feel serene. The height of luxury is to be comfortable in your own surroundings. And foir theat I need to see light and feel it all around me. Just because furniture is big and luxurious doesn't mean it has to look heavy. So I chose solid and pastel colors for my furniture." Her home entertains many guests, but only one area is off limits to the public and the various parties the throws, which is her own room, that is decked out in navy. "All are welcome except the the navy room upstairs" Her bedroom for ovious reasons should be kept private. "my secret place, where I watch my dvd's, and listen to music" She says "Fashion shows are public, my life is public, here I close the door and no one can come in. It is my treasure box. I wanted the colors rich that they would almost hide me." Her home is the supreme of luxury, and looking at her various furnishings, the empire pieces are some of the most beautiful in her home. Donatella adds color almost everywhere in her home, but she says the one color she doesn't like is "Beige" She then admits that she could possibly do a sofa in Beige, but would have to add some hot pink throw pillows.

The White House’s Empire Furniture

Empire furniture followed the Neoclassical movement of Louis XVI in France. Empire themes stated in the early 19th century and was named after Napoleon who ruled France. Empire furniture can be found in every country which also developed their name fom this same reference. One of the most famous empire designed rooms is the Blue Room of the White House. During the Madison administration, architect Benjamin Latrobe designed a suite of classical-revival furniture for the room, but only some working drawings remain of the original room, as the furniture was destroyed in the fire of 1814. The room was reconstructed with French Empire furniture similar to how it did prior to the burning in 1814.

Among some of the important and oldest furniture in the White House are some the original furniture ordered by President Monroe from Parisian cabinet-maker Pierre-Antoine Bellangé after the fire of 1814. President Monroe ordered the French empire theme furniture in mahogany. The company, however, sent gilded pieces, which they believed were more appropriate for an official setting.

The suite consists of 53 pieces with crimson silk with laurel leaves and eagles in two shades of gold. {1 pier table, 2 sofas, 18 (open armchairs ) fauteuils , 2 bergères(enclosed arm chairs), 18 side chairs, 4 upholstered stools, 6 footstools, and 2 screens.} Unfortunately, much of the furniture was sold off as a way of acquiring new furniture. Some of the original pieces were reacquired during the Kennedys' push to collect original White House furnishings.

The Blue Room is located in the center of the State Floor of the White House where the President formally receives guests. The oval room was uniquely designed host formal receptions. As the presidents guests mingle, and form a circle around him, the president would stand in the center of the room to greet them. The concept of an oval room leaves no one stuck in a corner, and everyone has equal distance from the president.

Blue Room In The White House. President Monroe redecorated the large oval room after the fire, he used the French Empire style, which is the current decor. The marble-top center table, that sits under the chandelier has been in the White House since it was purchased by President Monroe in 1817. This 19th-century chandelier is made of gilded-wood and cut glass, encircled with acanthus leaves.

The American Empire sofa, Mr Obama is sitting on is upholstered in a silk of the same shade of red. The Red Room contains several pieces of furniture from the New York workshop of the French-born cabinetmaker Charles-Honore Lannuier. The furniture in the Red Room dates from the years 1810-1830.

The Red Room furniture has a nice combination of richly carved and finished woods with ormolu mounts. The furniture is very similar to those of the French pieces now in the Blue Room. Egyptian motifs were extensively used Empire furnishings in France following Napoleon's 1798-99 campaign in Egypt. These same designs were then adopted by cabinetmakers working in New York, Boston, and Philadelphia.

The Empire Style was a style around the time period of 1804-1815. The Empire style was propaganda for the Emperor Napoléon I where he was able to present an image that sent off a message of power. One key to empire style is spare, noble, and massive. Its majesty lies in its imposing presence. Surfaces are flat and the corners are sharp. Moldings are non-existent. The small pieces of furniture for specific purposes became more rare. Some of the Empire Chests are grand! Often they feature the most stunning wood veneers which attracts most people to the empire looks. The Empire style is certainly very regal and sophisticated.

Mahogany was often the wood of choice during 1804-1815. Either blond, dark, moiré, figured, or flame wood is found to be the prime choice when it came to furniture. It is interesting to note that after 1810, mahogany became unavailable because of the continental blockade and furniture makers were forced to use walnut, burled elm, beech, ash, boxwood, olivewood, maple, and rarely citronnier.

Complex marquetry disappeared and was replaced by discreet inlay ornament. Fillets of blond wood, copper or steel were set into dark wood. Bronze fittings were the only ornaments on furniture, which is a testimony of the furniture quality comparied to todays common furniture finds. You will find on Empire Furniture the ornaments are often placed symmetrically on flat surfaces, as most empire styles are are entirely symmetrical in composition. The motifs on a piece's right and left generally correspond to one another in every detail. Marble tops are another element to the empire style and have found to have sharp corners and are most often gray or black.
